Disability Media Inc., (DMI), is a Private Nonprofit organization. Our purpose is to tell the story of persons with disabilities. We seek to inform the disability community, its families, and the general public regarding the accomplishments, strengths, and needs of persons with disabilities. We invite interested persons to participate in telling this important story. We will use journalistic articles, creative writing, lectures and speeches, and direct conversation to communicate our message. We wish to change old myths and create new realities. We believe that persons with disabilities possess the skills, determination, and spirit to fully join and contribute to the changing world of the twenty first century. We dedicate this web site to becoming a voice for a positive, dynamic, and creative community of persons with disabilities and there able bodied colleagues.

THE DMI WEB SITE PROVIDES INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE
The DMI web site receives many thousands of visits each year. We enjoy hearing from our visitors, and in many cases our visitors find useful information and assistance. Here are a few notable examples.
A recent request came from an editor of a newsletter for an organization that provides adaptive technology services to persons with disabilities in California. She asked that we permit her to reprint some of our articles in her newsletter. She wanted to present to her readers stories of the successful lives of disabled persons. We were delighted to have her download our articles. Her first download was our article about the way in which grandparents must respond with love and patience, when their grandchildren have disabilities.
In the early spring we received a call from a camp director who operates a summer camp for children who are autistic. This is a faith based camp, and we have found how important it is to the children and families that it serves. We have operated a scholarship program for summer camp attendees for many years, and we describe that program on our web site. This director found our information on the web site and shared it with the families of his campers. We received more requests for assistance, than we could fill, but we were able to provide support for three children, and we hope to help this worthy program in the future.
One of our more interesting requests came from the Eastern Disability Network of Ghana in Western Africa. The EDN wanted to produce a DVD that could be used to educate local leaders about the needs and abilities of persons with disabilities in Ghana. We helped the group to find funding for the project, and it is now complete. The DVD is posted on our web site. It provides an interesting and inspiring account of the struggles of persons in a developing country who are committed to living a productive and meaningful life, even though they have a disability. We encourage you to view this strong statement of the spirit of persons who want a chance to establish a life of self-worth and dignity.
Finally, an Executive Director of an agency serving persons with disabilities told us that she was going to spend a pleasant weekend reading the articles on our web site. It is our goal to provide our readers with interesting and informative accounts of the lives of real persons who are living with a disability. These real people struggle, but they also triumph. They learn to accept their lives and make the adaptations that are required to live successfully. This is the story that we try to tell, and we believe it is worth telling and learning about. We also provide information about books that we believe can be helpful to persons with disabilities and their families, as they seek to cope with a new disabling condition. One can also find information about programs that we sponsor to provide assistance to persons and groups that are trying to create opportunities for persons with disabilities and their families.
We hope you will take a few minutes to visit our web site to learn more about DMI and the communities of disabled persons that we serve. |
