The International Department It is a common place that we live in a global village. This is no less true for persons with disabilities, than it is for the rest of the world. For some time DMI has reported on the experiences of persons with disabilities in our global village. We have published articles which our writers have researched in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Africa. We now want to bring some focus to our international efforts. We are creating this International Department to encourage a grassroots discussion among the groups of persons with disabilities around the world who are taking up the challenge of self-advocacy, and who are working to create independent, productive lives for themselves and their families. We encourage persons with disabilities who are working at the grassroots level to send us a report of your activities. We will post your information, and hopefully your experiences will provide guidance to other persons who are similarly engaged. We also offer small grants to groups who are developing self-help and self-advocacy programs. We recently granted a group in Eastern Ghana funds to develop a DVD which can be used to advocate for educational and economic support. We plan to share these materials with others with similar goals. We believe that persons with disabilities around the world can encourage and enlighten one another. We invite your comments , information, and questions. Contact us at silcnetwork@earthlink.net. Homer Page
